Sustained Investigation

How can I show the journey of a character through a magical forest with an empashis on depth?

When I first thought about my sustained investigation, I knew I wanted it to be based around the supernatural meeting the real world. I had lots of ideas, but did not know which one to roll with. For my first piece, I went with a concept inspired from a cartoon, Gravity Falls, of birch trees with real eyes. Then I had the idea to add an unsuspecting person being watched by the trees. I realized that I wanted the character as a constant in every piece. So when I further developed my SI, I had each painting reveal the next part of the character’s journey through the magic forest. Another question I had was if the forest should be in the stages of fall or include other seasons. At one point, I wanted to have the setting in fall, partly because of another amazing cartoon, Over the Garden Wall. But when winter came around, I was inspired by the snow and knew I had to include it. So I altered image 8 into my transition piece of the seasons, and made 9. Finally, I decided to have the final piece, 14, take place in the Spring, which worked because of the symbolism and I could find inspiration all around me as the weather warmed.
